An Onne L. Heeren Company

In today's world, service from 9 to 5 is often hard to get and prompt reliable service anytime, 7 days a week, is virtually unheard of... unless you are a Custom Security customer. We're always ready to come out, even on New Year's Eve, to keep your system working and your family or business safe. Intruders don't keep a 9 to 5 schedule... your security company shouldn't either!

All of our service technicians are background checked, drug tested, Level II trained by the NBFA and are hired for their technical ability and their strong desire to help people.

Q. How long will the back-up battery last?
A. A valuable feature of your security system is its ability to continue working even if the power to your home is out. How long it can do this is a function of its size and most importantly its age. Every 24 hours your security system automatically performs a battery test. Should it fail, this information is transmitted to us at the Central Station so we can notify you that the battery needs replacing. As a rule, the battery should be replaced every 3 years.

Q. How often should I test my alarm system?
A. We recommend testing your alarm system about once a month. Also, anytime you have any work done on your phone line, we recommend testing your alarm.

Q. How do I test my alarm system?
A. Always call the monitoring center before testing your alarm. We suggest setting the alarm off and letting the sirens sound for 45 seconds. After turning the alarm off, call the monitoring center again to be sure your signal was received.

Q. If I add DSL high speed internet access to my home will it cause problems with my alarm system?
A. Adding DSL service will not cause your alarm system to not work, but will interrupt its communication to our monitoring station. Just as filters will need to be added to your phone lines, a similar filter will need to be added to the security system. Custom Security carries inexpensive filters specifically designed for security systems, that can either be installed by the homeowner or Custom Security. Remember these filters MUST BE INSTALLED to insure the proper communication of your security system.

Q. My keypad is beeping. What could be wrong?
A. When the keypad beeps or displays messages you have not seen before, this is normally an indication your security system needs to be serviced. It could be something as simple as a power failure, or something very important such as a failure to communicate. In any case, simply calling our office with a description of the sound or display will normally result in a quick answer arid solution.

Q. What is the chirping sound coming from the smoke detector in my home?
A. This is a very common question and one we receive almost daily. If your security company has installed fire detection devices, such as smoke and heat detectors, rest assured the sound is not coming from these. This sound can come from a variety of sources in your home. An iron left on, pager, cordless phone, but is usually associated to a low battery in a battery operated smoke detector.

Q. The red light is blinking on my smoke detector. I have not noticed this before. Is this normal?
A. A blinking red light, about every 15 to 30 seconds, is normal for the smoke detectors installed by your security company. This is just its way of letting you know it has power and is working.

Q. How long will smoke detectors last and should I test them?
A. Just like most things in your home, smoke detectors also have a limited life span. The National Fire Protection Association recommends replacing smoke detectors at least every 10 years or sooner, depending on the conditions. Testing should be done yearly and do expect some periodic maintenance such as dust or insect removal. Remember...test yearly and replace old detectors.
